How to Treat Spondylosis

By: K. Rad Payman on June 10, 2020

Dr. K. Rad Payman has helped to provide relief from the pain of spondylosis for countless men and women in Los Angeles. Spondylosis is the medical term used to describe degenerative conditions in the spine. Degenerative changes in the spine can include the development of bone spurs, or the degeneration of intervertebral discs within the spine. Spondylosis is also called osteoarthritis.

Spondylosis may affect the lumbar (lower) spine, the thoracic (middle) spine, or the cervical (neck) spine. Of these three types of spondylosis that men and women in Los Angeles experience, lumbar and cervical spondylosis are the most common. However, some individuals do experience spondylosis in multiple regions.

What Causes Spondylosis?

Patients are diagnosed with spondylosis as the result of aging, genetic predisposition, or a spinal injury. Degeneration in the spine is a natural phenomenon that affects more than 80% of men and women in Los Angeles over the age of 40. However, most don't see treatment until the degeneration begins to produce symptoms. Degeneration caused by aging often progresses slowly, without accompanying symptoms of back or neck pain until many people are much older. However, those who have a family history of spondylosis are also more likely to suffer symptoms of the condition earlier. Likewise, those who have experienced a spine injury in Los Angeles are more likely to experience spondylosis.

What Are Symptoms of Spondylosis?

Common symptoms of spondylosis include back and neck pain-often caused by a pinched nerve. This pinching (AKA nerve compression) can also lead to symptoms such as shoulder pain, or a headache. More significant degeneration can case muscle spasms, regional tenderness, or pain in your limbs, known as radiculopathy. In severe cases, groin pain or loss of bladder or bowel control can also occur.

How is Spondylosis Diagnosed?

Imaging tests will be used by Los Angeles Spine Surgeon Dr. K. Rad Payman to determine if spondylosis is the reason you're experiencing pain. These may include X-rays, which will show bone spurs, or MRIs, or CT scans. MRIs and CT scans provide far better imaging and detail, illuminating any pinched nerves, degree of herniation of a disc, narrowing of the spinal canal (stenosis) and much more.

How Is Spondylosis Treated?

As a degenerative process, spondylosis cannot be reversed. However, the symptoms can be managed.Dr. K. Rad Payman can help you get relief from back pain caused by spondylosis through a customized treatment plan which may include some or all of the following:
  • Medication
  • Physical Therapy
  • Injections
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
If you have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis or spondylosis, or if you suffer from neck pain or back pain with no obvious cause, it is time to consult with a Los Angeles spine doctor.
